About Eric L. Schiffman, D.D.S., M.S.

Dr. Eric Schiffman is a 30-year faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Early in his dental career, he saw the need for an external jaw support device for the patients he was treating for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Known worldwide as a TMD expert, he has devoted his career to discovering innovative treatment options for this complex orofacial disorder for both the practitioner and patient.

A pre-eminent researcher, Dr. Schiffman has authored more than 40 research publications and received more than $14 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health. His findings are considered the seminal work in the field for diagnosing and treating TMD in the clinical setting.

He has lectured throughout Europe, North America and South America. He received his D.D.S. from the University of Iowa and his M.S. from the University of Minnesota.

“In my decades of treating TMD, patients have told me how they dread their regular dental appointments. They’ll avoid any extra treatment possible to minimize their jaw pain. Dentists have told me how time consuming and difficult it is to treat patients who experience jaw symptoms during and after dental treatments. That’s how I came up with the idea of the Restful Jaw.”
